HISTORICAL ROUTE

UPPER SALT ROAD

“'Man’s real home is not a house, but the Road, and that life itself is a journey to be walked on foot.”

DISCOVER MORE

The Upper Salt Road is a spectacular unsealed former military road that connects the Piedmontese and French Alps to the Ligurian Sea. It winds its way along the mountainsides following the main Alpine watershed near the border between Italy and France, at altitudes between 1,800 and 2,100 metres, in a succession of Alpine crossings, bends and thrilling passes

The, entirely unsealed road, connects Limone Piemonte, in the province of Cuneo, with Monesi di Triora in the Ligurian mountains covering a total distance of approximately 30 kilometres. It is open to walkers, cyclists and motor vehicles (except on certain days of the week when the Via del Sale is open to walkers and cyclists only) during summer and autumn, after the snow has thawed.

ATTENTION!!!! URGENT NOTICE !!!!!!!!!

Due to the continuation of the adverse weather forecasts, which do not allow the road surface to be resurfaced in the foreseen timeframe, the road linking quota 1400 (Limone Piemonte) to Tenda Pass will not be practicable until Sunday 2nd July.

Motorised users who have already booked or those who wish to book to enter and/or leave Limone Piemonte will only be able to do so from the Roya Valley (France) via the road connecting San Dalmazzo di Tenda to Casterino and Tenda Pass.

Bicycle users will be able to enter or descend from Tenda Pass via the Via Romana, which connects Limonetto to Limone Piemonte, or via the Ciclovia del Duca, which connects High Pesio Valley to the Upper Salt Road.

We would like to remind you that both the route of the Upper Salt Road and the road to Casterino must be travelled with the utmost care due to the continuous rain.

If the work will be completed before 2nd July, we will inform you in good time about the possible reopening of the road from the altitude of 1400 metres to Tenda Pass.

We would like to point out that the Upper Salt Road is entirely passable and the two toll stations, Limone Piemonte and Monesi, are open and manned by the personnel in charge.
